Apo on the wall is about a father who is strict and a loyal servant of the country. He do the right things even if no one can see him. He is a strict and yet loving father to his children because he scolds his own flesh for him to do the right thing and to let him know his mistake. The boy is the son who is curious about things and named Apo as a scary Jesus.
The poem caught my interest since the author didn’t revealed who is Apo at first but it is already well-known for people to recognize who is Apo, and automatically also people will think, that Apo on the wall is the late President Ferdinand Marcos. He is indeed a powerful and familiar person.
The poem is like a door to the past going back to Marcos’ Administration on the darkest time of our country. It imparts message about Martial Law. Going back with the poem, it reflects the loyalty of every soldier by the picture of his boss (which is a President) hung on the wall. On my perspective, it tells us to work hard even more like the soldier, as we go on with the poem, there are things mentioned such as plaques and medals, it tells us to work hard to achieve something.
Things are being achieved by working hard. Better things can be owned without going through ups and downs and that includes pains and hardships. I know a lot of people sacrificed themselves during the Martial Law but let’s not hear only one side but hear them both, and seek for the truth,
if not, be on the middle, don’t side anyone for it is the best thing you could do. But let’s not forget, we won’t be able to gain something great without going through pain.
